For example, I may truly think that grass is red, but that doesn’t make it true. So in the case of truth, we should always change what we think holds true to complement what God says holds true in his Word. John 17:17 says, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” With my perception about the color of grass, I must readjust my beliefs to match reality.
With goodness, we would subjectively think that something is good for us when it is objectively bad. For example, I may think that drinking cyanide is wonderful for me daily, but that doesn’t make it so. Here, too, we should always change what we think is good to match what God says is good.
With my views of cyanide, either I would need to adjust my reality or thinking would eventually sink in! The same holds true with beauty. We might subjectively think something is beautiful – we may get pleasure from something – but what we think may not match with what is objectively beautiful.
For example, I may get pleasure from a particular masterpiece of design or song or style of music, and think that it is beautiful, but that does not make it beautiful. According to this passage, we are to take into account things that are worth compliment, things that are admirable. This implies total standards.
Here again we must change our preferences to match what God says is beautiful. Our responsibility as Christians is to improve what we take pleasure in to those things that are actually worthy of our pleasure – those things that are actually beautiful. During the years I was in university and the one year before I was married, I ate a great deal of processed foods.
I grew to love processed foods. So when I married eventually, and my wife began to get ready healthy, well-balanced meals for me personally, I’ll acknowledge that I must say I didn’t have a flavor for it initially! But as time passes, after abstaining from junk and dieting on healthy food, I soon developed a taste for whatever was actually good. Similarly, Christians can transform their preferences to match what is worthy of their delight actually.

1. We like what we realize. Some social people think, “Well, I happen to like that, and there’s nothing at all I could do about it.” That’s not true. We develop a taste for things we regularly feed ourselves. We like what we’re accustomed to. 2. We can change what we like by changing what we realize. Unbelievers are constrained to do what they like, but not believers.
Christians have freedom in Christ to give things up, even if they really like them. And Christians have the freedom to bring things into their lives that they may not really like at first. As Christians, we have an obligation to like what’s worthy of liking. We have the duty to judge all things and evaluate whether something is worthy of our delight based on absolute standards about the type and character of God. If we determine something to be unworthy, an obligation is had by us call it what it is, and rid ourselves from it. And if we determine something to be worthy truly, then our delight in that thing magnifies our delight in him who is ultimately beautiful.
